Haiti Earthquake Fundraising... Livonia, Michigan Children Photographer

My heart and prayers goes out to the people affected by this devastating tragedy. I want to try and raise money to help those in need. The Haitian Red Cross said it believed 45,000 to 50,000 people had died and three million more were hurt or left homeless by the major 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

Starting today and going through the weekend (1/17/2010) I will be selling Carrie Lee Photography gift certificates and 100% of the profit will go toward Haiti relief.

I have picked a specific charity and all raised funds will go to Doctors Without Borders.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has provide emergency medical care to millions of people caught in crises in nearly 60 countries around the world. With the current events , MSF has already treated more than 1,000 people on the ground in Haiti following Tuesday's earthquake, but the needs are huge. An inflatable hospital with operating theatres is expected to arrive in the next 24 hours.

Gift certificates can be used for yourself or given as gifts. They can be used towards a session fee or used towards prints or products. The certificate will be good until December 31st, 2010. Normally I sell gift certificates with a $50 minimum, but these special certificates used for charity can be purchased for any amount. Every bit will help and I want to try and raise as much as I can quickly. I am thrilled to donate all the profits that I receive from gift certificate sales over the weekend to help out.

First of all, I want to thank everyone that nominated a deserving family for the "Giving is Awesome" giveaway. What a great gift you are you offering and it was amazing to see so many people take the time to write such great letters about the people they love.

I have to admit, it was very hard for my judges and I to decide who we felt really needed this gift. Most of the stories we read were heartbreaking and I definitely wish the best to all our nominated families.

The votes starting coming in from the judges and it was close one at first, but in the end this is the letter that tugged at our heart strings the most...

When I thought about who truly deserves your photography services, I did not have to think long to come up with the most deserving person you will ever find. The most deserving person is Nettie. This wonderful, most caring person in the world, is my aunt and she has sacrificed so much for two wonderful children that I believe in my heart she truly deserves this special gift.

Let me tell you a little about her and why….

At the age of 15, my aunt gave birth to her first son, Jason. Despite the odds of being a teenage parent, she took wonderful care of her son and made the best home for him that she could. She was married to his father at a young age, and unfortunately lost her husband, father of her child, to Hodgkin’s disease when her son was only two years of age. Despite the heartache of losing her husband and father of her child, she carried on and continued to work to provide her son with everything she could.

She later met my uncle, William, and had 2 additional children, Nicole and William. Nettie had young children at home, but wanted to complete her education so she went back to school and received a GED. Throughout her life she would often hold two jobs, while trying to provide a home for her children. Through conversation, I have learned that she would often work long hours to provide for her family and at times would have such little left over after paying for a babysitter, gas, and insurance needed to work.

My uncle and aunt have worked hard in their lives to provide for their family, often with little for themselves. Neither had medical insurance during several periods of their life because they could not afford the cost of such and be able to pay their bills and put food on the table. Despite all of this, my aunt has always had the most positive view of life and cherishes her children dearly. She is always an inspiration to me and believes everything will work out for the best.

Five years ago, my cousin gave birth to her daughter Jordin. My aunt was a doting grandmother and tried her best to help support her daughter in caring for a child as a single parent. My cousin stayed with my aunt and uncle for a few weeks and eventually rented a house next to my aunt. During this time, my cousin relied heavily on my aunt for financial and emotional support. My aunt often took care of the little girl as she saw that her needs were not being met. Throughout the first two and a half years of Jordin’s life my cousin did less and less to provide for her child and eventually left the home and her child in the care of her mother.

My aunt continued to provide for Jordin and sacrificed so much to give her the love and home she deserved. My cousin had little contact with her daughter and eventually my aunt was providing everything for this little girl. In fact, she was acting as a parent when my cousin was not. She did not have much, but provided everything she did.

A little over a year ago, my aunt found out that my cousin was pregnant again and had already contacted an adoption agency only weeks prior to delivery. My aunt could not imagine having this grandchild adopted out and not having the opportunity to develop a relationship with the infant. She also thought that Jordin should have the opportunity to be raised along with her sibling. My uncle and aunt finally decided that they would take the child and raise it along with Jordin. My cousin readily handed over the child from the hospital never looking back.

Over the last year, my aunt has continued to sacrifice in order to provide for these two little girls. She gave up her job because she could not afford to pay for a babysitter in order to be able to work. She tried working for first couple of months after Aliah was born, but eventually realized she was bringing home less than she was paying for childcare. Again despite all hurdles, she continued to be the best role model for these children and provided them the love and everything she had.

Jordin recently celebrated her 5th birthday and Aliah her 1st. My cousin did not bother to come to either celebration. Out of the blue a month ago, my cousin came to her parents and informed them that she was married, pregnant, and wanted her girls back. My aunt and uncle were devastated. Jordin had resided with my aunt and uncle since the age of 2 ½, and Aliah from the first day home from the hospital. My cousin went to the police, after my aunt and uncle refused to just hand the girls over after she had had little to no contact for years. Thankfully, the police agreed that it was not in the best interest of the children and they would remain in the home for the time being.

I would like to give my aunt the most memorable gift of your photography services in the likelihood that her grandchildren will eventually be given back to their mother. I believe the memories of the holiday pictures would mean the world to her, especially if she does not have the girls physically in her presence. The pictures would remind my aunt of these precious children and also remind her that she provided the best world possible to two little girls in the time they needed it the most.

Please help me be able to give Nettie this gift. Thank you for this consideration.

Does anyone recognize this sweet little face?? This is Anthony, winner of our Favorite Things" contest.

Mom wasn't joking, this little guy is ON THE MOVE! He was definitely Mr. Explorer for the day and I think we found a great location for him. There was tons to things to see and nature to experience. He wasn't so sure about me and wasn't a big fan of smiling, but that's ok. With gorgeous eyes like that, he's going to melt everyone heart with or without the "cheese" smiles! :)

Holiday mini sessions are perfect for the kids, couples or families on the go that don't have enough time to invest in a regular Fall Session with me and/or just need a few portraits for Holiday cards and gift giving.

Holiday Mini Sessions are ONLY $125! (plus 6% MI sales tax)

What's included:
- The Holiday Mini Sessions are only 20 minutes long. This is enough time to get group portraits and a couple individual shots. There will not be time for outfit changes or multiple scenes. If you are looking for a more custom session and the time essential to capture more candid portraits, I would suggest booking a full session. I do still have some spots available before the end of the year.

- A password protected online gallery with up to 10 finished images to choose your prints from.

Everything I Ever Wanted...

I used to cut photos out of magazines and tape them all together creating pages of families for my pretend family album. I had pages and pages of families and had a story in my head for every single one. There were families with 2 kids, families with single moms, families with adopted children; I even labeled them all with a name and an age. At the time I was just having fun and wasting time, but I see now that this was another hint that should have pointed me in the direction of my correct career path. I remember I would spend hours sifting through magazines searching for the perfect Moms to go with the Dads and the perfect kids to complete their family. I would pick names and use my imagination to create a story for their lives together. It sounds so silly but I loved browsing through the pages I created and showing them off to everyone willing to look. Of course I had my favorite family, the one I would imagine someday being my own… and it included you, Alayna. (only your name was Nicole, but I called you Nicki :)

When I look at you now, I know you were given to us as a gift from God. You were carefully thought out, hand crafted and custom made to fit PERFECTLY into our family. Some girls plan for years how perfect their wedding will be. Every little detail, imagining it over and over again in their head hoping one day their fairytale will come true. Not me. I skipped right over that fine detail and began planning how wonderful my “one day” daughter would be.

2 years ago today, my wish came true.

You are everything I ever wanted. Everything I imagined you would be and more. I always wanted a little girl with strawberry blonde hair and beautiful blue eyes. She would be small like me, but what she lacked in size, she would make up in spirit. She would be sweet and caring, but confident and fearless. She would love to be close to the people that mean so much to her, but she would be independent and strong. She would have a smile that was infectious and a face that could not go unmentioned. She’d be girly, couldn’t get enough of her baby dolls and fingernail polish, but could hold her own in a game with the boys.

She would be the important piece missing.

The moment I saw your face, I was in love. I know every mother says this, but it really was true. The doctor held your tiny little face over the drape and my heart suddenly melted. Tears swelled up in my eyes and I was reminded in that very second that there has to be a God and he has granted my lifelong wish… my perfect daughter. And you have been exactly that, my perfect little dream come true.
In the past 2 years you have gone from our precious tiny peanut to our sweet little spitfire. Every day I get that same feeling of pure love when I look at you. I can’t get enough of your hugs, kisses and snuggles. I could stare at you all day with a smile on face. You are exactly what I imagined and hoped you would be. Even the little Scorpio attitude you have is part of the plan. You match the profile completely and I can’t imagine what life would be like without you. I feel so blessed, thank you for making my life so special.

Happy 2nd Birthday Alayna Bana! I love you with all my heart.

Family Session... Milford, Michigan Children Photographer

Sometimes I just have a feeling... it's going to be a good day.

It's a little nerve wrecking when you're walking into a house you've never seen, getting ready to do some indoor shots and you have NO idea what you're going to find. Will there be a lot of clutter to work around in the background? Will the lighting in the house resemble something that you would find in an underground dungeon? I just cross my fingers and hope for the best, but this session was different.

I walked in and KNEW, I was going to get some gorgeous shots. Their house was decorated beautifully. Neat, clean and simple yet warm and homely. Mom answered the door with smiles and she was just as gorgeous as the sweet baby she was carrying.

Little "S" was such a joy. No matter how hard we tried, we couldn't squeak a smile out of her, but she was posed and cooperated like a doll. Even the family dog was on his best behavior for our session.

I left there with an extra bounce in my step, knowing that I had some great shots to edit when I got home.

Sometimes you just know... it's going to be a good day!

Senior Session... Livonia, Michigan Photographer

The weather was great... the timing, not so good. What a cute little location I stumbled upon and I thought it would be perfect for this senior shoot. Unfortunately there was a little concert going on that we were unaware of and lots of people to shoot around. OOPS! That's ok, we made the best of it, the beautiful leaves colors definitely helped out. The days are getting shorter and shorter which make it hard for the evening shoots. We salvaged all the light we could before the sun finally set. And we ended up with some gorgeous portraits.

What a pretty lady I had the honor of photographing. I wish you all the best of luck with graduation. What a special time in life, cherish the memories. :)

So this has been a great week for me, and I tell you what, I NEEDED IT! I have 2 big announcements to make today, I hope I can hold your attention long enough so you get to the good part, aka the giveaway... (if not, you know where the scroll arrows are.... cheater! :)

Let me give you a little inside information about me and how I got where I am.

I've been into photography for a long time. I just can't get enough of it. It's an obsession for sure. And I'm ok with that... the first step is admitting you have a problem, right??? :)

So my wonderful boyfriend (husband now) decided to get me a manual slr camera when I was 19 years old. Up until then I was rocking the CVS throw-away cameras. I was so excited but knew nothing about technical photography and God forbid my social life be interrupted for me to take the time to LEARN. UGH! I just started running around shooting everything. And I wasted lots of money on expensive film and developed TONS of crap photos. (and a few good ones when I got lucky.) So I got frustrated and throw that camera in the back of my closet and CVS should thank me for that because I went right back to clearing their camera shelves.

When we got married, the bulk of our wedding budget went to our photographer. I felt that our pictures would be the only thing that lasts forever and I was willing to pay top dollar for the preservation of our special day. My husband couldn't quite wrap his mind around this, but being the good man he is, I got the "Whatever makes you happy" OK and I ran with it.

When we had our first child I quickly realized that my cheap point & shoot digital camera was not doing this gorgeous kid justice. I swear, he was the world's cutest baby and we needed to document every cute face he made with something more high tech. Again, my husband rolled his eyes at the idea, but guess who was the one waiting in the huge line at Best Buy on Black Friday to buy my "dream" camera???

I learned so much for that camera and found so many websites to help develop my skill. I was in love and knew that I found my passion. I had hoped that one day I would be able to start my own business and I throw myself head first into the world wide web for 4 years to learn everything I could about photography.

In December of last year I found an ad for my dream job, working with Bella Baby Photography and applied. I didn't have much of a portfolio to show and was quickly shot down. I knew I was better than that but I had no proof to show.....yet.

$$$$ and 2 camera upgrades later....

In January I got my first official job working as a photographer. Not the one I wanted, but a close second. The job was gold to me and I loved every single minute of it. I was working 6 days a week and couldn't get enough. I was at Providence Park in Novi taking studio pictures of newborns and the joy I got out of it was HUGE. The job abruptly ended with a ridiculous non-compete agreement. I struggled with my decision but knew that I couldn't sign my life, dreams and passions away to one man/company that didn't deserve it.

So I stood up on my own two feet and started Carrie Lee Photography. I LOVE love LOVE it!!! Being able to share my love for photography and create something so special for families is priceless. I continued to build my portfolio and was quickly getting sessions booked. I still had Bella Baby in the back of my head the whole time and started ~~researching~~ , no, let's be honest here... I started stalking the company to find out who was in charge of hiring in the area. After a few months I got an interview and got the job! I was ecstatic!

Unfortunately the job they had to offer was put on hold and I was left waiting. Still working on my own business but wanting more. I contacted/stalked the manager every few weeks to make sure nothing had opened up and she assured me that she would contact me if something did. I waited and waited and I was just about to give up when I saw this....

"Hi Carrie,

Just wanted to let you know that we have an opening at Royal Oak. If you are still available and this will work with your schedule, I would love to talk! :) Look forward to hearing from you!"

OMG! I almost peed my pants, I called my husband and he said I sounded like I was going to cry! In all honesty, I did.

So the BIG NEWS is I FINALLY GOT THE JOB! I am officially a Bella Babe starting next month. So get ready to look forward to LOTS of in-hospital newborn pictures flooding my blog in the near future. :)

*sidenote* In case you read my blog, I wanted to thank you John Kelpin for all you gave me. The drive to be better, the opportunity to NOT be held down, and for the open door that appear the day you terminated my position. I can't show my gratitude enough!!!

Grow With Me - 6 Months... Livonia, Michigan Children Photographer

Unfortunately we missed out on "A's" newborn pictures but boy did she shine at 6 months! She is such a sweet little thing and was more than cooperative with all the position and clothing changes. I have to say, I have a serious soft spot for red hair and blue eyes.

Thank you to the whole family for reminding me how much I love my job. See you again in 6 months!

Photog Field Trip..... Detroit, Michigan Photographer

Just taking a little break today and decided to put my creative juices to work. Over the summer I met up with a group of local photographers and we headed down to the Heidelburg Project. Very neat place, very strange art, but GREAT for experimenting with photographs and colors. Here's a couple shots I played with today.

Much different from what you're used to seeing from me, but life gets boring if you don't allow for variation, right?!?!

We're back from our trip to California!

I think Alayna's favorite part of the whole trip was chasing seagulls on the piers. She was sick and miserable at the beginning of the week so it was wonderful to finally see her having fun and enjoying herself.

October Special: The 2-4-1

I'm running a special for the month of October, it's called 2-4-1. It's kind of like a double session, a two family session for the price of one!

Here are the details:
If you are interested in booking a session and know someone else that is also interested in booking a session, you split the cost of one session fee and both get some great pictures! What a deal! This special is available for kid, family or couple sessions up to 4 people per family. Sorry, but newborn and senior sessions do not qualify for this special. The double session will be 1 - 2 hours and the photos will be taken seperately per family but we can also include some together if requested.

Gallery Wraps... Livonia, MI Children Photographer

Check out this awesome little tool I found. I can create a virtual preview of what your art work will look like by adding a picture of the wall in your house you plan to hang pictures.

These gallery wraps are so beautiful. They are definitely a bit more pricey than wall portrait prints, but with gallery wraps you don't have the added cost of the frames. And I'm sure you know how expensive that can get when you're talking about hanging a couple 16x20 portraits!

I have a gallery wrap sample for clients to see and feel at their session. They really are great for displaying your portraits in a more artistic manner. SOOOO much prettier than those silly frames.

Once you go WRAP, you'll never go back! (ok, I apologize, that was super dorky..what can I say? I can't hide the excitement!)

Somehow I feel a little vulnerable here, I'm displaying my big secret here that the magic doesn't naturally come right out of the camera. To tell you the truth, it NEVER does. Even if I am RIGHT ON exposure-wise, color balance, framing, etc. there are always little tweaks that need to be done to "finish" an image. This is the where the artist's time/talent comes in. I'm not joking around when I say I spend more time in front of my computer then I do behind my camera. But it's all part of the process and I love it equally...thank God. :)

So, here we go, I'm stripping off my layers to show you the naked images SOOC. (sorry... that's shop talk for Straight Out of Camera :)

Fearless... Livonia, Michigan Family Photographer

I think back and remember the times I used to stuff her little legs in a sleeping bag and send her flying down the stairs… and she wasn’t scared. I remember how she couldn’t be pushed high enough on the tire swing and she would climb to the top of the tallest slide on the playground… and she never looked down. I remember showing up early to pick her up at gymnastics so I could watch her tiny body do giant back flips and hurl herself full-speed towards that horse and fly over… she had no fear.

I’ve always admired that about her. The strength, independence and courage she has are unmatchable.

When she said she might be moving to California, I think my heart stopped. I forgot how to breath. I smiled and congratulated her but waiting until I got home to break down and cry.

I knew she would end up going and I didn’t want to see her go.

All her life she hasn’t feared a single thing. I always watched from the sidelines with a lump in my throat and held the fear for her. And this move wouldn’t be any different.

You don’t doubt Jenny. You don’t tell her that maybe she’s making the wrong decision or that she’s being careless. You don’t tell her that most people wouldn’t have the guts to do HALF the things she’s pulled off in her life. Even when you are scared to dead for her, you just try to close your eyes and blow more wind into her sail… because that’s what keeps her going.

And every time, without doubt, she does it fearlessly and gives you another reason to be proud.

Less than 2 weeks until I go visit her in California! I can’t wait to get there and take some pictures to add to this post. :)

I don't always go the creative color route, but sometimes the images "speak to me" as my Mom would say.

It's the type of pictures that makes me adore every minute of my job, the ones that give me goosebumps, the ones that I can't look at without my heart smiling.

This series of pictures was taking during and after the best man toast. As usual, every one's eyes were on the best man as he proceeded to embarrass the groom and compliment the bride. Meanwhile, my lens was on the happy couple capturing the tender moment everyone else failed to see.

The laughter they cherish, the bright future they have to look forward to and the love they share for one another.

This little girl must have been too excited about her pictures to fall asleep. Mom was feeding and feeding her and still she was just having too much fun and didn't want to miss out. But that's totally fine with me, look at those beautiful blue eyes!

Just because she wasn't sleeping, doesn't mean she wasn't tired. I love baby yawns... so sweet.

The Artist's Time/Talent

If you have taken a look at my pricing sheet, you will notice ttttthat the session fee covers the artist's time/talent only. I thought maybe some clearification might be helpful to some.

There is a lot of time that goes into professional photography. I'm sure it's easy for the clients to go without knowing this because they see the photographer for 1 - 2 hours at the session and maybe a few minutes when the order gets dropped off. But there is a lot of work behind the scenes that sometimes goes un-noticed.

Here are a few samples of some editing work done in photoshop. This is really what your money pays for. This is what makes the work some photographers do stand out from others. This is what makes a good photo excellent!

You might remember this face... He was one of our runner-ups for the "Favorite Things" Contest. When Mom contacted me she said she really liked the style of the punker rocker boys so we were looking for something similar for our session.

Major props to Mom for finding the location, how did I NOT know about this little piece of photography heaven?!?! I'm thinking about packing up my belongings and moving there...I'm THAT in love with the place! Of course I'm going to have to get over my fear of broken glass and homeless men, but other than that it was nothing short of FAB-u-lous!

And what an absolute doll "L" was! He was full of baby tooth grins and giggles the whole time. I couldn't have enjoyed this session anymore.

She was such a sweetheart for her pictures. I bought all my secret newborn photography tricks along with me to the session and didn't have to use a single one. She even flashed us a few smiles. She was so alert to what was going on around her but didn't seem to mind one bit what we were moving her all around the house to find the best lighting. I think she enjoyed being a model for the day!

Does He Have a Brother?... Brighton, Michigan | Wedding Photographer

You always hear the stories. She was single, her friend finds a good man and immediately the first question is "Does he have a brother?" How often does that really work out, I want to know! In this case it did! They met, it was love at first sight, and they texted friends and family the whole way home like silly teenagers. And the story goes... 6 months later engaged, 6 months later... MARRIED!

I guess when you know, you JUST know.

Rob and Sarah, thank you for putting your trust in me and allowing me to be a part of your special day. I have to admit I was extremely nervous but you both have such a sweet calming disposition and it was only a matter of time before I too felt like family. Wow, I had no idea I would get such a great response from this contest! I just counted all the entries and there were 108 sumbitted! WOW!!!!
And now I have the hard task of narrowing these 108 beautiful pictures down to only 5?!?! This is going to be tough.

Some Random Cuteness... Livonia, MI Children Photographer

A peaceful baby in the most adorable stocking hat. My grandmother made this by the way. She's an amazing knitter. I just gave her a picture and a week later she had this hat whipped up. A huge thanks to Ellie and the ladies at The Knitting Room.

A super cute little spitfire playing with an old Jack-in-the-Box. Man, she loved this thing! It never get old either, she laughed so hard every single time Jack popped up...like she was seeing it for the very first time.

These pictures are just priceless. I am so grateful and honored that I have the pleasure of capturing something so special for families. Something as simple as my daughter playing with a toy made me smile that day. But framing that picture for my wall will surely bring YEARS of happiness and laughter, reminding us of the great time we had that day.

He would stay out there all day if it were up to me. Which gets really hard when it's a million degrees out, sunny beyond belief and the poor kids is allergic to sunscreen! ARGH! He loves riding his bike, playing in the sandbox or swinging on the swing set. And this summer he is finally starting to master the skill of pumping. Hooray for me!

Punk Rockers... Fenton, MI Children Photographer

The family was way more than I ever could have asked for with the Punk Rocker Casting Call. They applied for the role last minute and I am SOO glad they did.
What a group of cuties! They were so COOL and trendy in their rocker clothes, I loved it! Not my usual session, but I had so much fun getting them to "rock out" and act silly. It didn't take much convincing with the silly part, these kids were a riot!!! :)

"Favorite Things"Contest

I’ve done a couple contests in the past, but nothing that get you guys up and moving. So here is a contest with the intention of getting my readers involved. I hope you like this one!! ANYONE can participate so make sure you pass the word around. And the prize is HUGE which will hopefully help get everyone pumped up.

How many photos do you have of your kids smiling? How many do you have of them laughing? If you're like me, you have a LOT! But what are they so happy about? Why are they laughing? How often do you take pictures of the THINGS that make them happy?

So here is the contest:

Shoot your kiddos with their favorite things! Make a list of 5 things your kids love or love doing and start snapping pictures!

You can submit anywhere from 1 to 5 photos per child. No more than 5! Your kiddos can be of ANY age (teeny babies and moody teenagers have favorite things, too!) The pictures have to include the favorite thing AND the child…even if it’s just their hands of feet, they must be in the picture.

Email your entries, one at a time please to: carrie@carrieleephotography.com Each picture you enter will count as one entry so entering all 5 per child could increase your chances of winning.

Make sure you include your photo and a brief description of each "favorite thing". I also need your kiddos first names/ages, your name (first and last) and a contact email.

The contest starts RIGHT NOW and entries must be submitted by Friday, August 21st @ 12 noon.

5 photo finalists will be posted some time the following week and the #1 winner will be up to the readers.

What a joy this session was. Baby "S" was open to just about anything I had in mind. He didn't care which way I moved his arms, head, fingers and he was gracious enough to stay the way I wanted him....what a sweetheart. My money's on a successful career in modeling for this little guy, he was just gorgeous!
And the icing on the cake, he didn't make a mess any of my blankets or Mom and Dad's bed. Babies don't get much better than this! :) Congratulations Proud Parents!

Ok, here we go with the FIRST Carrie Lee Photography Casting Calls!

I'm looking to fill in a few gaps in my portfolio with certain types of portraits. Anyone can "try out" for the spots if they meet the criteria. If you have friends or family that fit the role, please share this with them also.

All casting call will be 30 mini sessions. If you (or your child) are picked for one of the sessions, you will receive 50% off the session fee! That would be only $37.50 for the print package or $75 for the digital package. Please check in previous posts to see what the mini session includes.

Of course this offer is for a specific time only and only one person/group will be picked for each session. I will be accepting entries until Thurs. August 6th at 12pm and I will be announcing the winners on Thursday evening.

Casting Call #1 - Maternity Session, August 8th @ 7pm
I am looking for a women that is 7 - 8 months pregnant and not ashamed of their body appearance. Someone that has a beautiful sun dress to wear and doesn't mind being barefoot. We will meet at an outdoor location in the evening time to capture that special "glow". This try out is for only the pregnant mother, sorry, no family or husband/wife pictures this time.

Casting Call #2 - Punk Rocker, August 8th @ 4pm
I am looking for one COOL kid that owns some trendy punk rocker clothes, a BOY age 5-8 years old. Someone that's not shy and doesn't mind getting their picture taken. Converse shoes, spiky hair and electric guitar props are a PLUS. We will meet at a downtown location for an urban feel and just have some fun ROCKING OUT! This session can be for a single boy or a group of 2-3 brothers/cousins/friends in the same age bracket. I will need to see a picture of the funky clothes you plan to use for the session.

Children Mini Session... Northville, Michigan Children Photographer

I know Mom really wanted to get these pictures taken last weekend but the weather was not cooperating. We were on the fence about whether or not we should reschedule for another time and I could hear the disappointment in her voice when I told her my suggestion would be to wait. I knew we could do better than that dreary weather so we decided to try again the next weekend.
Thank goodness, the weather was MUCH nicer. Just goes to show...good things come to those who wait. :)

"L" was so pretty in her purple dress and fancy dress shoes. She was a little concerned about smiling for me, but I got a little giggle or two out of her. Thank you Mom and Dad for fighting the rough traffic on the way over...darn Michigan construction!

Newborn Session... South Lyon, MI Children Photographer

Welcome to the world little man, we've all waiting a VERY long time for you!

With newborn sessions, it is best to contact me while you are still pregnant. We can go over all the details so that you will be prepared and know what to expect. Obviously we can’t book a session date since we can’t predict when the little arrival will make his/her grand entrance, but it helps for me to know when the time is coming near so I can be sure to have a few dates available.

Newborn sessions are best scheduled in the first 2 weeks. I jokingly say that I’ll meet you home from the hospital but that’s only half joking. Ideally we should try and schedule the session at 5 - 7 days old. I know your lives have just been turned upside down, I understand your house might be messy and it’s fine if you didn’t get a chance to take a shower that day. Newborn babies are a lot of work, I know, I’ve been there. But if you wait too long, those tiny little bodies are going to come uncurled and those little arms and legs are going to start kicking and the precious, peaceful newborn pictures you are hoping for are going to be so much harder to get.

For the session day I ask that you don’t have guest over to “watch” the session, the less people there, the better. Don’t worry about trying to find “that perfect outfit”, babies photograph best in just bare skin and maybe a diaper cover. I will bring many props and love to incorporate any special items you have as well. The goal for these sessions is to get baby sleeping soundly. When I arrive I will have a look around your home for a place to set up most of my things. I will be looking for good light, so I don't have to use a bunch of flashes on your newborn. I may have to move a few things around and look all over your home. Don’t be alarmed if I tell you we’re going to have a photo shoot in the kitchen…you’ll just have to trust me. While I’m snooping around your house, I will have you feed your baby, and we will then try and get him/her to sleep. I will then be the one to change and position baby, and we will go from there, taking notes from your newborn and only doing what keep him/her and you comfortable and happy.

Things rarely go exactly as planned. Newborn sessions normally take a lot longer than regular sessions. We will need to take feeding breaks, soothing breaks, “change our clothes and blankets because we got peed on” breaks…it’s all part of the fun.

Don’t worry, I have lots of blankets and everything is washable.

And don’t stress about the mishaps, your baby will pick up on that.

A day or two after your shoot I will put a sneak peek up on my blog of a few images I grab while uploading and backing up. Within 2 weeks of your shoot I will put your images in a private online gallery and email you the password. Your gallery will remain online for 14 days for you and your family members to view and decide which images you want to order.

Silly Kid Quotes Contest... Michigan Children Photographer

Kids say the silliest things.

On one of our wonderful trips to the grocery store, there I was... A shopping cart full of food, one whining toddler, temporarily satisfied with a dum dum sucker and a blabber mouth 4 year old in tow. For some reason that day my son could not get enough of hearing himself talk and was not taking the hints that I had my fill of random thoughts and useless information. I just wanted to quickly and quietly check out and get home. I told him "Jacob, sometimes when you talk so much it makes my head spin." He looked up at me kind of strange and confused, but it worked, he finally gave it a rest and we got home without anyone completely losing it.

Little did I know this simple comment would come back to bite me.

A few days later in downtown Northville at Town Center, Jacob was entertaining himself with random loud noises. I honestly don't think he realizes that not everyone enjoys shreaks and fart noises quite as much as he does. I quietly said "Jacob, could you please be quieter?" and he yells out "Why Mom, am I making your head spin?" I could hear the snickers and laughter from the people sitting close by and although I was a tad embarrassed, I couldn't help but laugh myself.

Kids are hilarious, most of the time I don't even think they mean to be. I want to hear some stories about your little comedians. So share your silly kid quotes by commenting here.

This little one is known for her sleepiness. Mom says people always ask why she doesn't have any pictures of her awake. I guess she was saving up all her alertness for me! :) Poor little thing...near the end she was getting sleepy but was unsure if she could trust to completely let go with me moving her around and snapping pictures.
We also got a few shots of Big Sisters outside while Baby Sister took a little break. What gorgeous little ladies you have Mom and Dad.

Putting it out there... | Livonia, MI Children Photographer

Years ago I was not a believer of putting things out in the universe. But when I look back on my life, so many things that I've wanted and talked about have actually come true. So I want to make this official and put something out on the universe and I plan to work hard and never forget how much this means to me.

I want a sucessful business. I don't mind taking baby steps to get there, but I will not rest until I'm there. I want some space to create a cozy inviting office where I can meet with clients and get to know them before my photo shoots. Maybe some extra space where I can create a studio. (a little extra detail in case the universe is listening....maybe a 20'x16' room, big north facing windows, and hard wood floors please. :)

I feel like a gigantic door has opened for me and I've been looking for the key to this door for a very long time. I think I was always aware that the door was there, but was afraid to just walk on through. Now that I'm on the other side I couldn't be more excited and I can't wait to decorate! :)

I was so excited to see these little guys again. I took newborn pictures of boys where they were only days old. They are so big now! And it was nice to get to meet the rest of the family, what a sweet bunch of people. The girls were just adorable with their beautiful curls and big brown eyes.

It was definitely a task to get everyone looking at the camera and smiling at the same time. I have to admit, I was a little worn out after this session. HUGE props to Super Mom and Super Dad, I don't know how you do it and still look so gorgeous!

Who likes math? Nobody likes math, math is not fun. I have decided to simplify my services so that you don’t have to do the math. No more adding up print costs, just pick the package that works best for you. Not only will this save you the stress of making the final decisions, but it also is going to save you money in the long run. Win, WIN! I will still offer a la carte items, but by choosing a package, you’ll be getting more prints for less dollars. And when it comes down to it, viewing the images in your gallery is nice, but what is more important to me is that my clients have these portraits to proudly display in their home.

And this is a digital world, more often people want the digital files. Who am I to horde the images all to myself?? So I have added a digital package just for the "print yourselfers" out there. Now there is an affordable option to get your images on a CD and the copyrights so that you can choice what to print and when to print it.

I have a blast yesterday at my very first mini session. I am already planning to schedule another one because it was so much fun! If you are interested, send me an email and I'll be sure to let you know when a date is scheduled.

5 pretty little ladies and one very handsome young man made it out and I got TONS of great pictures. Despite the 50% chance of rain, it ended up being PERFECT picture weather.

HUGE thank you's to the parents for coming out for our shoot and of course many high fives to the awesome little models. You were all so photogenic and knew just the right way to light up my camera....and melt my heart.

I know there is a bigger purpose for us on this earth than just enjoying ourselves. There are lots of things that need to be done, fixed or changed and tons of people that need to be helped, lifted or loved.

At the end of my life, which I hope is a long LONG time from now, I want to be able to look back and know that I made a difference.... somewhere, to someone.

I plan to continue a once a week blog that gives readers an "idea" of something that can be done, just 1 thing, that would make a difference to brighten the future. (so DON'T FORGET to sign yourself up as a blog follower and check back frequently!)

I had the pleasure of photographing the cutiest trio today. 3 lovely sisters, all with beautiful eyes and gorgeous hair. (Well not the newest addition, but I'm sure she's soon to follow.)
The weather tried to rain on our parade, but we wouldn't have it. What fun we had playing the piano and having tea parties. These girls reminded me of the fun my two sisters and I had when we were young. What a blessing to have a built-in group of best friends from the moment you are born.

Because Dandelions are Pretty too

My son is constantly picking dandelions for me. Everyday... even a couple bouquets a day sometimes. He knows I love it. When we were in South Carolina on a bike ride, he got off his bike to pick me a beautiful red flower that was carefully planted in a garden. I yelled "NO, not those flowers!" just in time. Confused, he asks "Why? I always pick you flowers at home, why can't I pick these?" I started to explain that dandelions are just weeds and they are alright to pick but I could tell he just didn't understand how such a pretty yellow flower could be a weed. It was better just to say that we can only pick flowers that grow in our yard, this red flower isn't ours to pick.

I was playing around with some color conversions today, what do you think??

Hi, I'm testing a new way to post images to my blog. Hopefully this will help to make the pictures more clear and help to keep the website navigation user-friendly.

What a GREAT vacation we had. Lots of sun, swimming, beach fun and good friends. Just a little bit of rain. The drive was very long but well worth the time we had there. I forgot how much I love the beach and I can wait for the temperature here to warm up so we can visit the lakes nearby. None of us wanted to leave, but I'm sure the dogs were glad we came back for them.

Here are a few pictures from my point and shoot camera of our family trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

And how much fun I had! Poor little baby had no idea what to think about all these pictures and was afraid to sleep a single wink. I had tons of fun working with him and his mom. What an adorable little fella! Here are a few favorites.

Hello, I am so happy to see that people have stopped by my site to check things out. I sincerely apologize for the "contruction" that's going on. The website is still a work in progress and FAR FROM where I hope one day it will be.

I plan to update the blog frequently so be sure to bookmark me and check back from time to time to see sneak peaks from my sessions and also any specials that I might be running.
